April 28 – USS Alabama

With the civil rights topics still fresh on our minds we drive to the USS Alabama which has seen war and has plaques aboard to remember some of the soldiers that lost their lives while fighting for our freedom and independence.

Walking towards the USS Alabama

We paid our admission and grabbed a self guided tour pamphlet. There’s a few tours to choose from, all color coded. We chose the yellow tour which is everything on the deck and above (well almost everything, there was some maintenance which had the last few stops closed off). The tour was thorough and fun, made me grateful I haven’t had to fight in a war and especially on a boat like that.

Self guided tours, not always the best, but it works for this ship

After touring the Alabama, there’s another small self guided tour you can take through the small submarine on site. Amelia wasn’t feeling well so her and Jen sat on a bench to rest while Henry and I went in.

We toured another submarine with Grammy at OMSI (in Oregon) so this was tiny in comparison, but also fun and enjoyable. Henry really liked seeing the torpedos again.

Say hello to my friends, the torpedos

There’s a bell in front of the visitor center which neither kid could muster the guts to throw hard enough to ring it themselves. A big kid came along and did it for them. I’m not sure if they were happy or upset about it, but it wasn’t really “that” loud.

The bell, it’s so loud.

After touring the vessels and looking at some airplanes, we called it the end of the day at another Walmart parking lot where we could get a few more groceries and settle in for hopefully a good night’s rest.
