April 11-14 – Empower2Make

I was blessed to have the opportunity to fly to Virginia and take part in a weekend make event where 5 teams each took on a challenge to develop a solution for a person living with a disability. The projects ranged from a column of shelves the swivel out to enable a young wheelchair user to access more of his things to an active muscle sensor that can vibrate muscles that are tense when they shouldn’t be (this is for therapeutic treatment to enable a young lady to make progress in her therapy sessions and provides feedback to her therapists).

The teams got together and started working on their projects before the opening presentation, motivated makers.
Vacuum forming a custom contoured seat for the end users golf cart.
Talking through the details for the walker support.
Posters are up, we’ve all got a “little” sleep, open the doors, lets show the people what’s been developed.

Being that I was in Virginia, I also called up my friend who I graduated from ASU with. He and his wife (she’s soon to be an occupational therapist) made the drive up to NovaLabs to attend the presentations and see how far the teams had got in only 72 hours. It was a blessing to be a part of the event and also to spend some quality time with these two. We’ll see them again when we drive through Virginia later this year.

They brought some brochures for when we come back to town.
