DIY Traction Boards

Traction boards made from milk crates, 550 cord, and carabiners .

Anyone following our journey thus far knows that I like to go off the beaten path, and as we’ve found out, sometimes that leads to a pause in our forward momentum. Our last “stuck” (thanks Drew for the pull) lead to our desire to get some traction boards to help get ourselves unstuck.

The industry standard are Maxtrax. They’re targeted at serious off roaders and many who pay the $350 swear they’re worth every dollar.

Maxtrax – $350

Being more of a do it yourself guy, I had to see what other people had come up with. I saw someone use a milk crate and that was the path I took. I found this on Amazon, and a couple days later they were delivered.

Milk crates – $18 for two

Today I went to Create @ AZ Science Center, cut them up and heated up the corners to help them lay “flat”.

Cut up crates were flattened using a heat gun and some clamps.

Then I stopped by Walmart to grab some 550 cord and carabiniers to complete the assembly. Total cost is $24 and an hour of my time. I put them above the spare tire under the rear of the van. Hopefully we don’t ever need them but if we do, I hope they work 😃

The traction boards live above the spare tire under the back of the van, hopefully never to be seen again.
